Medfield Massachusetts Night Street Photography
Quiet Main Street Beneath Glowing Traffic Lights
What stopped me here was how completely the town seemed to have settled into the night. Medfield, Massachusetts, was quiet, the intersection almost empty, and the strongest presence came from two traffic lights glowing an intense blue-green through the darkness.
Royal Pizza sits on Main Street, its small illuminated sign becoming one of the few obvious signs of activity in the scene. Farther down the road, streetlights and a handful of headlights disappear into the distance. Overhead wires cut through the darkness, while the surrounding buildings are barely visible except for the occasional window and edge picked up by the available light.
There was also a slight haze in the air. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.
That contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. I have always been drawn to scenes like this — familiar pieces of everyday life that become visually different once the crowds disappear and the light takes over.
