A Charcoal Brazier and Book in the Master's Room

The broad rim of the brazier draws the eye into this room before the finer lines of the book and paper screens become clear. I photographed the master's private room at Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan, where a few domestic objects sit within a carefully measured arrangement of tatami, timber and pale wall.

The residence's official guide identifies this room as the head of the household's living space. Its less formal woodwork contrasts with the reception rooms used for important visitors. That difference gives this quieter interior a particular significance: it belongs to the domestic side of samurai life.

The hibachi, or charcoal brazier, also helps explain how the space was used. Such braziers held charcoal in a bed of ash and provided warmth close to people seated nearby. The open book and low stand suggest another floor-level activity within the same room, without requiring the space to be filled with furniture.

What I love here is the feeling of order. Curved metal, rectangular pages and the fine grid of the shoji each have a distinct place in the composition. The black and white treatment connects them through tone while preserving their different textures. Light spreads across the tatami and leaves the upper wall quiet, giving the whole view the peaceful structure that draws me to these old Japanese homes.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
