Curved Handles and Vessel Shadows Along a Wooden Shelf

The handles make two clear arcs against the wall, echoed by their softer shadows. On a wooden shelf at Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan, patterned iron kettles stand beside ceramic bottles. I was drawn to their different silhouettes and to the way black and white lets surface, shape and light carry the photograph.

Iron kettles combine a practical role with considerable attention to appearance. The Tokyo National Museum describes both their use for boiling water and the aesthetic importance of casting surfaces and patterns in Japanese tea culture. That history adds another way of looking at these vessels, whose decoration remains closely tied to objects made for use.

In this frame, the rounded bodies and raised designs give the light a series of small edges to catch. The ceramic bottles rise more quietly behind them. Their long necks make a different rhythm from the broad kettle lids and open handles.

The shelf brings everything onto one steady line, while the textured wall holds the shadows without distraction. I love the order I feel in these old Japanese homes, especially when it emerges through everyday objects. Here, a small group of vessels becomes enough for a complete composition. The photograph preserves the peaceful relationship between useful forms, worn surfaces and the surrounding space that made this corner feel special to me.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
