Weathered Wood Leads Through a Fine Tangle of Stems

A fallen log runs into a dense bed of marsh grass, its pale surface giving the eye a route through the fine stems. I photographed this scene near my Haliburton studio in 2016, drawn to the simple relationship between weathered wood and surrounding plants. The close view keeps attention on that small piece of the Ontario landscape, where texture does much of the work.

The log enters from the lower edge and narrows into the grass. Cracks, knots and dark marks break up its surface, while blades and stems cross it at different angles. I like how the broader shape of the wood stays readable within such a tightly woven setting. The grass has its own rhythm, shifting between upright lines and long curves that bend through the frame.

A restrained warm monochrome tone brings these surfaces together. Light catches the thin stems and the exposed grain, with darker spaces adding depth between them. For me, the photograph finds a quiet subject in an everyday detail close to home. Viewed from across a room, the log forms a clear diagonal within a soft field of texture. Up close, the smaller crossings and changes in the wood become more noticeable. This print offers a detailed Haliburton nature study for a wall display with an interest in subtle earth tones, woodland materials and closely observed landscapes.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
