A Small Figure Beneath a Monumental Screen Face
A man stands near the lower left corner of the Crown Fountain tower, looking upward toward the enormous face displayed above him. In my black and white photograph, the difference in scale is immediate. His figure occupies only a small part of the vertical frame, while the tower and its gridded surface rise almost from bottom to top.
Crown Fountain is Jaume Plensa’s public artwork in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Here, I have photographed one tower together with a person standing beside it, keeping the encounter at the centre of the image. The displayed face remains recognisable through the repeated glass blocks, which divide its features into a dense pattern of small rectangles.
I like the contrast between that broad image and the individual below it. His stance provides a clear measure of the installation’s size without needing a second tower in view. Trees flank the lower edges, a building appears on the right and the pavement’s lines lead toward the base. Those surroundings keep the artwork within an everyday city setting.
Black and white brings the figure, the screen face and the glass grid into one tonal arrangement. The photograph would suit someone interested in Chicago, public art and street scenes where people help explain the scale of a place. From a distance, the face dominates; closer viewing reveals the small figure and the regular surface through which the image appears.
