A Red Car and Everyday Life Along Weathered Facades
A red classic car brings the strongest colour to this Havana street, but it is only one part of the scene. Two men sit beside a doorway on the right, a small dog stands in the road, and other people gather farther along the pavement. I photographed them within the surrounding buildings, keeping the street’s everyday activity and its worn surfaces together.
The car’s rounded body and bright chrome stand against pale blue, green and cream walls. Above it, balconies, hanging clothes and crossing wires add layers of detail. Peeling plaster and mismatched doors give each section of the frontage its own texture. On the right, the green window frame and the seated men provide another point of interest beyond the car.
What I enjoy about the photograph is that the eye has several places to settle. The red paint may draw attention first, then the dog leads you into the open road and the figures bring you back toward the buildings. There is no single grand landmark here. Instead, the scene holds a collection of small details that belong to the same stretch of Havana at one moment in 2017.
