Wet Brick Paving Leads Toward Two Tuscan Towers
An empty lane winds between stone walls in San Gimignano, with two towers rising above the tiled roofs ahead. I made this photograph on an overcast, slightly rainy autumn morning in Tuscany. The wet brick paving carries a soft sheen, and the close walls make the route through the town feel particularly narrow. A dark doorway on the right interrupts the rough stone without breaking the street’s long perspective.
I like the sepia treatment of this image for the warmth it gives the scene. The amber sky and brown stone belong to the finished photograph’s interpretation of that morning, rather than suggesting bright sunshine. Darker areas at the edges draw attention into the lane, where the paving becomes progressively smaller as it approaches the distant buildings.
There is plenty to look at before the eye reaches the towers. Uneven stones, slender plants along the wall and the patterned door give the street its particular character. Without people in the frame, those small details have room to register. The composition combines a clear path into the distance with surfaces that reward a closer look.
