The Record Room Sligo Shopfront Black and White Photography
Irish Music Displays Behind a Quiet Sligo Pavement
The lettering above The Record Room first caught my attention in Sligo, Ireland. It stretches across a shopfront full of smaller things to look at: rows of music releases, instruments, printed covers and notices. I photographed the building from across the street, keeping the whole front within the view. The pavement is empty, so the displays and signs have the space to hold my attention.
Two large signs give the photograph a straightforward structure. The Record Room occupies the left side, and Music Room appears above the entrance to the right. Beneath them, the windows are much busier. I like that contrast between the clear words overhead and the dense arrangement behind the glass. Individual objects become visible gradually, rather than announcing themselves all at once.
The open doorway adds a darker vertical space to the right side. Next to it, an Irish Music display gives another block of covers and lettering against a pale section of wall. The black and white treatment makes those differences easy to follow: dark frames around bright signs, lighter paper inside the windows and shadow beyond the door.
I kept a strip of road and pavement below the shop because it anchors the building within an ordinary street scene. For me, the photograph is a close look at a particular local storefront. Its character comes from the accumulated displays, bold lettering and open entrance, all present together in the moment I made the picture.
