Layered Coastal Rocks Beneath Portland Head Light
The rocks hold most of the frame in this black and white photograph of Portland Head Light in Maine. I placed the lighthouse near the horizon, allowing the broken ledges to stretch toward it from the foreground. The white tower is small against the sky, but its upright shape gives the whole coastal scene a clear point of focus.
Look closely at the rock surfaces and the view becomes a study of lines. Long ridges run diagonally through the picture, interrupted by deep cracks, sharp edges, and pockets of shadow. Their changing directions make the ground feel uneven and substantial. Above them, the softer cloud tones leave room around the lighthouse and the buildings beside it.
I have returned to this stretch of Maine coast many times, finding different angles and moods on each visit. Standing beside the sea, I remember the cool breeze and the sound of waves against the rocks. Here, I wanted the photograph to carry something of that exposed setting through the relationship between the low buildings, the tower, and the broad rock shelf.
Black and white brings those textures together without letting colour pull attention away from the land. The lighthouse remains easy to recognise, while the foreground rewards a longer look. As a coastal photography print, it offers both the familiar outline of Portland Head Light and a close sense of the rugged ground that surrounds it.
