Portland Head Light historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

A black and white photo of the iconic and historic Portland Headlight lighthouse over the coastal rocks early morning on a cloudy day with dramatic clouds cover in black and white. The famous lighthouse is a white conical tower, plus a Victorian-designed home that housed the lighthouse keeper.

In the fight for American Independence, the New England coast at Cape Elizabeth was initially manned by military soldiers to notify those in the area of an attack by British Ships. Years later, the United States' first president, George Washington, commissioned the lighthouse's construction in 1791.

Many photographs were taken on this 220-year-old lighthouse, so I wanted a different angle. On that morning, with waves crashing over the rocky coastline, I climbed down the rock and placed my camera on a low grade emphasizing the unique shaped rocks. The lines of the rock lead the view into the historic building. The dramatic clouds complete the framing of the fine art photographic print perfectly.
