Red Marks Across Layers of Toronto Street Paper
I found this wall during one of my long walks through Toronto with my camera. At first, it looked like a crowded tangle of paper and paint, but the repeated advertisements gave me a way into the scene. Several bright, relatively intact sheets sit above older torn layers, while red and black graffiti crosses the rougher surface below. I stopped to photograph the wall as a whole section, keeping both the repetition and the disorder within the frame.
Texture was what held my attention. Ragged paper edges, small printed fragments and exposed patches of the wall create a surface that changes almost everywhere I look. I like the difference between those broken pieces and the clean rectangular sheets near the upper centre. The repeated red lips on one group of advertisements make a particularly clear pattern within the larger accumulation. Other small blocks of blue, green and darker print remain scattered among the paler layers.
The broad red strokes travel across several of those surfaces, linking details that might otherwise feel separate. Black curves and lettering add another set of lines beneath the advertising. I wanted the photograph to preserve this overlap between street writing, commercial print and weathered paper. Its colour comes from those existing materials, with reds and darker marks standing out against worn cream tones. Looking at the image, I can follow the larger shapes first and then keep discovering smaller fragments within them. That was the pleasure of photographing this particular Toronto wall.
