Shared Laughter Among the Festival’s White Costumes
Their laughter opens up the whole frame. One woman faces me with an open smile while the other turns toward her, both surrounded by the white costumes of a Tuscan village parade. I made this black and white photograph at a wine festival in 2010, moving among the participants rather than watching from a distance.
The celebration had spilled into the streets, with broad hats and loose garments repeating through the crowd. Being close allowed me to hold the exchange between these two women while keeping the public setting around them. The central face is sharp and direct, but the portrait depends equally on the second woman's response.
A figure in the right foreground partly closes the view. Behind the women, more faces appear between hats and shoulders, and a raised hand adds another small movement. I left these overlapping figures within the composition because they give the photograph the feeling of being inside the procession. The moment continues beyond the edges.
Dark buttons and fabric folds give definition to the light costumes. In monochrome, those details help organize the crowd without taking attention away from the women. I like how a busy scene can hold such a clear point of contact. The laughter is immediately readable, while a longer look reveals the smaller gestures around it. It is a photograph of shared enjoyment within an event, with the surrounding activity still very much present.
