Rye Brick Courtyard Black and White Architectural Photography
Pointed Doorways and a Round Window After the Rain
I wandered into this courtyard in Rye, England, late in the day after a brief rainfall. The damp ground still held small puddles, and the old brick buildings made a series of quiet shapes around the open space. In this black and white photograph, their texture and overlapping rooflines become the main way of reading the scene.
The nearest doorway caught my attention first. A tall pointed window sits above a pale wooden door, framed by courses of brick that rise into the gable. To its right, a small circular window interrupts the wall. The difference in scale between those two openings gives that corner of the building a character of its own.
I kept the view wide enough for the courtyard to lead away from it. Another projecting section repeats the roof shape farther back, while a smaller facade closes the distance on the left. There are no people in the frame. The empty paving lets me follow the buildings without losing the sense of space between them.
What stays with me is the unevenness of the surfaces. Brickwork darkens near the ground, roof tiles form fine repeated lines, and the wet pavement holds scattered lighter patches. Monochrome brings those details together without flattening them. This was a small part of my walk through Rye, but the arrangement of doors, windows and open ground was enough to make me stop.
