Starburst Headlights and Bright Diagonal Trails Across a Dark Road
Headlights break into sharp starbursts across a crowded stretch of the Las Vegas Strip. Behind the more clearly defined cars, moving traffic becomes long diagonal trails of white light. I made this black and white photograph in 2012, using the roadway itself as the subject and letting repeated light shapes build the composition.
What caught my attention was the mixture of movement and near-stillness. Some vehicles remain recognisable, their windscreens and front grilles visible between the bright headlights. Others have become continuous lines stretching towards the upper right. That difference gives the image a changing rhythm, with compact flashes of light beneath longer, smoother bands.
The pavement adds another layer. Reflections fall below the cars as pale vertical marks, broken by the road’s uneven texture. Dark palm shapes near the right edge interrupt the trails, giving the bright diagonals a more definite boundary. I kept the surrounding areas dark so the viewer could follow those illuminated forms without a competing skyline.
Monochrome brings the scene towards geometry. The headlight points, sweeping trails and reflected patches remain distinct against deep shadow, while small details in the vehicles appear with closer attention.
For someone drawn to night photography and graphic urban scenes, this photograph offers a different view of Las Vegas: the traffic’s light and motion concentrated within one frame. My eye moves between the sharp headlight bursts and the softer trails, following the contrast that made an ordinary busy road worth photographing.
