Pale Windows Repeat Across a Dense Pattern of Wooden Homes
Small wooden homes cover the hillside in this black and white photograph of Larung Gar’s Buddhist settlement in China. The view is filled with roofs, pale windows and the narrow spaces between buildings. I’m drawn to how the scene can read as a dense pattern at first, then separate into individual homes as I look more closely.
The white window surrounds make the clearest repeated shapes. Some are small and square, others form longer rows, and their different heights keep the arrangement from becoming regular. Dark timber walls sit against the paler hillside. Roofs overlap, supports show beneath some buildings, and narrow routes thread through the gaps. I like those interruptions in the pattern because they bring the view back to a place with separate structures rather than a single surface.
I made this photograph in 2015. In monochrome, colour gives way to differences in tone and texture. A bright wall or a group of larger windows becomes a small point of focus, while the surrounding buildings carry the eye onward. The hillside’s slope is still felt through the way the homes rise behind one another, even though the photograph stays close to their detail.
This print may appeal to someone interested in Larung Gar, settlement architecture or travel photographs with a lot to explore. In a study, library or living room, it can offer a detailed view that changes with the distance from which it is seen. For me, that movement between the larger pattern and the individual homes is the photograph’s lasting interest.
