Swimmers And Shoreline Crowds Beneath The City Buildings
People occupy nearly every layer of this South Beach photograph. I made the black and white image in Miami Beach, with swimmers in the foreground, a dense crowd along the sand and tall buildings rising behind. The concentration of human activity was what I wanted the frame to hold.
The nearer figures are softer than the shoreline crowd. I like that change in focus because it creates depth and lets the eye move through the water toward the finer detail beyond. The swimmers’ separate gestures give the foreground a rhythm, while the people on the sand form a much denser band.
Above them, hotels and residential towers establish an urban beach setting. Their windows repeat in grids, contrasting with the more irregular pattern of bodies and waves below. Black and white brings the different layers together without the added competition of clothing, umbrellas and building colours.
I wanted the horizontal composition to suggest the crowd continuing past both edges. The larger arrangement reads as people, surf and architecture; closer attention reveals individual movements within it. For me, the beach is inseparable from that activity. The photograph keeps the scale of a busy public place while allowing smaller gestures to remain visible, giving an ordinary coastal scene the density and energy of a city street.
