Stone Building and Wooden Window Bays in China Photography Print
Weathered Timber Projects from Stone Walls Against a Wooded Slope
A stone building stands against a steep wooded slope in this photograph from China. Its broad wall is broken by small windows, while long wooden window bays project from the adjoining side. I’m drawn to the difference between those surfaces: the irregular stonework has a dense, mottled pattern, and the timber adds straighter lines and deeper shadows.
The angle of the view lets the building’s corner remain clear. One wall occupies much of the picture, while the side with the wooden bays recedes toward the left. I like following the roof edge along that change in direction. Below it, the projecting woodwork has repeating panels and supports that reveal how far it stands out from the stone.
The hillside provides a softer background. Trees and pale branches cover the slope, with their uneven shapes contrasting with the building’s more deliberate edges. The restrained colour keeps the materials close in tone, so texture does much of the work. Dark openings beneath the timber bring a little more depth into the facade.
I made this photograph in 2015. For me, its interest lies in the meeting of a substantial building and the land around it. As wall art, it may suit a study, hallway or room with wood and stone among its materials. It can appeal to someone who enjoys architectural photographs, Chinese travel scenery or weathered details that reward a closer look. The view offers both the larger shape of the building and smaller patterns within its walls and windows.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
