La Bodeguita Havana Layered Graffiti Colour Photography
White and Blue Lettering Across a Dense Orange Wall
There is almost no untouched space in this section of wall at La Bodeguita in Havana, Cuba. Large white letters cross smaller black writing, and vivid blue marks cut through both. I photographed it as a close detail, allowing the layered lettering and orange surface to fill the entire view. The result is a picture that can be looked at as writing or simply as a dense arrangement of lines and colour.
The orange background remains visible between the marks, tying the many separate gestures together. Some letters are broad and easy to follow, while others are partly hidden by later writing. I find myself moving between those scales: noticing a large curve, then discovering several much finer marks inside it. Pink and green traces add smaller changes in colour beside the stronger blue, white and black. The wall’s uneven surface stays visible through the accumulated marks, giving the photograph texture as well as pattern.
My interest here was in that overlapping rather than in a single message. There is no clear beginning or end to read through, and the vertical frame cuts into the larger wall on every side. That makes the detail feel continuous beyond the photograph. I wanted to preserve its busy character without simplifying it into one isolated word. Each time I look at the image, a different stroke or small piece of lettering becomes clear within the larger field of colour.
