Layers Of Handwritten Marks Across A Blue Wall
Names, dates, drawings, and overlapping messages cover a blue wall at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana. I photographed this close detail in 2017, drawn to the sheer density of the marks and the way they turn a familiar wall into a lively graphic surface. The colour image is less about the bar’s exterior than about the accumulated pattern of handwriting.
There is no single place where the eye has to begin. Large black letters cut across smaller writing, while red, yellow, and white strokes add accents between them. Some marks are carefully formed; others seem quick and loose. I enjoy that mix because it keeps the surface active without resolving into one neat message.
A stronger band of blue runs across the lower part of the photograph. It gives the composition a broad division, but the writing continues over it, connecting the two areas. Small stickers and fragments of drawings add another layer of shape. From farther away, the wall reads almost as an abstract colour study; close up, individual names and symbols begin to emerge.
I wanted to preserve the visual experience of standing before this particular surface. Its appeal is in the variety and overlap, rather than a claim about the history of each inscription. For a space that suits bold urban detail, the photograph brings Havana street texture into view with a concentrated palette and a pattern that can hold attention for a long time.
