Emerging from my lens is an invitation to a world painted in hues of green and brown - the lush expanses of Killarney National Park. This photograph is an ode to the ancient trees that have stood their ground for centuries, their trunks wrapped in a thick, green cloak of moss. Twisted roots and gnarled branches, they are the silent sentinels of time, their majesty dominating the canvas of the park.
This photograph is an echo of the rich history of the park. Established in 1932, it was the first national park in Ireland, a gift of the Muckross Estate to the Irish Free State. The park has grown since then, now spread over 102.89 km² of diverse ecology, including the Lakes of Killarney and extensive woodlands of oak and yew.
A walk through the park is a walk through the pages of geological time. Devonian Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous limestone form a major geological boundary in the park. Above 200 metres, the mountainous sandstone areas offer expanses of blanket bog and heath. This photograph, a snapshot of that journey, presents a microcosm of this varied ecology.
