Strong Pier Lines Above Soft Atlantic Surf
From the sand, the pier becomes a long diagonal reaching toward the morning horizon. I photographed Juno Beach Pier in Florida as warm sunrise colour appeared behind the clouds, using an extended exposure to soften the Atlantic waves beneath its supports. The solid structure and the moving water give the image two very different kinds of texture.
The nearer supports are large and sharply defined. Farther out, they gather into a smaller repeating pattern, drawing the eye toward the end of the pier. Above them, the deck and railings sweep in from the upper right. That perspective makes the structure feel close enough to stand beside, while still carrying the view out to sea.
I remember the sand underfoot and the rhythm of the waves at that early hour. In the photograph, the water becomes broad, blurred bands rather than separate breaking crests. Dark reflections collect beneath the supports, and a little of the sky’s gold reaches the wet surface below. The clouds keep the light uneven, with brighter openings close to the horizon.
What I wanted to preserve was that balance of strength and softness. The pier gives the scene a firm shape; the surf and changing light make it less fixed. As a coastal landscape print, it brings together a recognisable Florida landmark and the quieter details of a morning at the water’s edge, with the long perspective holding the whole view together.
