Alternating Window Bands Rise Above the Waterfront Walkway
Harborside’s buildings form a pattern of light and dark in this black and white photograph of Jersey City, New Jersey. The waterfront building steps upward toward an American flag, while taller facades rise behind it. I photographed the view from across the water, where the different layers of architecture could be seen together.
The strongest feature for me is the alternating band of windows and pale wall surfaces. It carries across the lower building, then follows the stepped shape toward its centre. A narrow dark section provides a different rhythm within that pattern. Behind it, the taller building’s more regular grid feels quieter, allowing the nearer facade to stand out.
At the base of the picture, the waterfront walkway adds a smaller scale. People and a row of umbrellas are visible along its edge, above the textured water. I like having those details beneath the large buildings. They keep the photograph connected to a place people use, even when the architecture dominates the view. The flag brings another small point of movement among the straight lines.
Made in 2009, this photograph holds my interest through its layers rather than a single landmark. It can work as wall art in an office, study or living room with an interest in modern architecture. For someone familiar with Jersey City, the waterfront may carry its own memories; for someone drawn to monochrome city photographs, the repeated windows and stepped facade offer plenty to explore. I enjoy the way the buildings remain distinct while fitting into one shared view.
