A Taxi Framed by White Road Markings and Tokyo Buildings
A dark taxi sits within a wide outline of white road markings in this Shinjuku street photograph. The avenue stretches beyond it between rows of buildings, creating a strong sense of distance. I photographed the scene in Tokyo in 2025, using black and white to bring the roadway, light, and architecture into one clear composition.
The taxi gives the foreground a definite centre without filling it. To the left, a broad shadow crosses the asphalt at an angle, meeting the brighter section of road farther ahead. Windows and vertical signs repeat along both sides of the avenue. A few pedestrians and cyclists appear near the pavements, small against the building fronts. Higher in the frame, cables cross a textured sky, introducing thinner horizontal lines above the stronger lines that lead down the street.
During my walk through Shinjuku, I was watching how changes in light altered the shape of ordinary streets. Here, the white markings gave me a structure to work with, while the approaching vehicle supplied a point around which the rest could settle. I kept the distant avenue visible so the photograph would retain its depth. Monochrome makes the sunlight and shadow on the pavement especially direct, but there is still plenty to find along the shopfronts and upper floors. For me, the picture brings together two scales of city life: one vehicle close at hand and a long street continuing well beyond it.
