Ornate Samurai Armour With Crescent Crest Monochrome Photography
Patterned Shoulder Guards and Tassels Beneath a Crescent Helmet
Two broad points rise above the helmet in this samurai armour photograph from Tokyo. Below them, the mask, patterned shoulder guards, and paired tassels create a much denser arrangement of detail. I photographed the suit in monochrome, keeping the crest and upper body together so the decoration could be seen within the shape of the figure.
The helmet has a ribbed crown and a row of rounded fittings beneath the crescent. A dark brim shades the face, where the open mouth and curled moustache give the mask a pronounced expression. Thick cords loop beside the jaw, and circular fasteners follow the neck guard. Lower down, the chest combines horizontal plates with smaller raised details. Two large knots and their hanging tassels interrupt those bands, while patterned fabric and mesh cover the arms.
Standing directly before the display, I was drawn to the difference between the open space around the helmet and the closely packed surface below it. The pale background makes the crest easy to follow, but the shoulders and chest reward a slower look. I used the light to separate those overlapping textures without smoothing away their complexity. This is one of the suits I studied while photographing armour in Tokyo, and its elaborate front remains the feature that holds my attention. The photograph brings that ornament into view without needing to explain the person who once wore it.
