White Crosswalk Lines Between Illuminated Shops and a Dark Sky
The red road was the first thing that held my attention on this street in Asakusa, Tokyo. I made the photograph as daylight gave way to the shop lights, framing the road straight ahead beneath a dark blue sky. Its warm surface gives this colour street photograph a strong path into the distance.
A white centre line begins near the bottom of the frame and leads toward the crosswalk beyond it. On both sides, tall buildings and illuminated signs create a narrowing corridor, with pools of shop light gathering at street level. The foreground stays open enough to show the road's worn markings and changes in tone. Farther back, pedestrians, bicycles, and small points of light add detail without closing off that central view.
I often work in black and white when photographing cities, but I wanted to keep the colour I found here. The red pavement brings a warmth that sits well against the darker sky and buildings, while the white markings keep the composition easy to follow. Standing on the street, I was watching the balance between its activity and the clear line of sight ahead. That balance remains the part I enjoy most: a lively Tokyo setting with room for the eye to travel along the road, pause at the shops, and return to the light in the distance.
