Kurashiki Tatami Room and Tansu Cabinet Monochrome Interior Photography
Worn Wooden Drawers Beside a Bright Shoji Screen
Entering this quiet tatami room in Kurashiki, I was drawn to the cabinet in the corner and the soft light beside it. This monochrome photograph keeps the tansu, shoji screen and open floor together. The cabinet has a dark, compact shape against the walls, while the mats lead toward it in long bands of fine texture.
The drawer fronts carry visible wood grain and wear, with dark fittings interrupting their surfaces. Two lower doors and several smaller drawers give the cabinet its own varied arrangement of rectangles. I wanted those details to remain clear within the room, rather than crop so closely that the surrounding space disappeared.
On the right, the shoji screen provides a brighter grid. A diagonal change in light crosses its lower panels, contrasting with the straight divisions. Below it, the tatami edges draw stronger lines across the foreground, while the woven surface repeats at a much finer scale. The room brings those different patterns together without feeling crowded.
I took time studying the angles before making the photograph. With so few objects in view, the relation between cabinet, window and floor mattered more than adding further detail. Monochrome helped keep that arrangement simple while retaining the worn wood and mat texture. What I wanted to preserve was the feeling of arriving in a space that made me pause: light at one side, a substantial wooden object at the other, and open floor between them.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
