Warm Lights Rise From the Water to the Hillside
I waited for the city lights and the remaining evening light to find a balance. From this elevated viewpoint in Istanbul, Galata Bridge gave me a clear route through a scene full of smaller details. I made the photograph in 2014, with an amber sky still holding above the hillside and the waterfront already glowing below. That overlap is what I like about this hour: the sky has room to breathe, while the city begins to reveal itself through its lights.
The bridge cuts diagonally across the water, linking the nearby rooftops with the busy shore beyond. Boats sit along the crossing and waterfront, and their pale shapes interrupt the darker water. On the opposite bank, the illuminated mosque and its slender minarets draw my eye upward. Buildings crowd behind them, climbing towards another group of domes on the skyline. I kept the foreground roofs in the frame because they add a nearer layer before the view opens across the water.
Colour holds those layers together. The warm light along the bridge and shore leaves broken reflections on the water, while the orange-brown sky gives the distant architecture a quieter backdrop. I wanted the photograph to include the city’s ordinary density as well as its more recognizable landmarks. The small buildings, vessels and roads make the larger view worth exploring. Looking at it now, I still follow the same path: from the roofs close below me, along the bridge, then up through the illuminated waterfront into the evening skyline.
