Orange Light Reflects Beyond the Dark Lock Gates
A bright orange sunset reflects along the Intracoastal Waterway beyond these lock gates in Virginia. I photographed the scene with the dark gates and railings across the foreground, letting their clear lines frame the warmer light on the water. This colour print brings a working waterway into a quieter evening view.
The gates leave a narrow opening near the centre, while the railings form a repeated pattern above them. Their reflections break into smaller shapes on the nearer surface. Beyond the lock, the water becomes smoother and carries a much stronger band of orange. Trees gather along the banks as dark silhouettes, with taller trunks defining the right edge of the scene.
I made this photograph in 2009. What I enjoy is the contrast between the practical structure close by and the open light further away. The gates give the picture a firm starting point, but the sunset draws the eye through them. A small boat in the distance adds another quiet detail without changing the calm of the waterway.
For someone who loves boating, canals or Virginia waterside places, this print can bring a warm focal point to a study, living room or cottage. Its combination of dark structure and reflected colour gives it depth without a busy palette. For me, the scene holds a particular pause: the locks remain present in the foreground while the last light reaches out across the water beyond.
