Bright Water Pools Below Deeply Ridged Icelandic Mountains
Small pools of water first pulled my eye into this Icelandic landscape, before the broad mountain ridge took over the view. I stood looking across the broken foreground toward its steep, marked slopes, where light and shadow made the surface unusually clear. The open terrain left very little to interrupt the composition. I wanted to keep that sense of space while giving the nearer pools enough presence to lead into the mountains beyond.
Dark mounds and shallow channels spread across the foreground, with pale water reflecting the sky between them. Beyond lies a lighter, flatter band before the land rises sharply. The central mountain has a broad upper edge and steep sides traced by fine lines, while a taller peak stands further left. Patches of snow and ice appear across the higher ground on the right. Above it all, clouds have both bright edges and darker centres, adding a second layer of shape over the ridged terrain.
Black and white lets the small reflections and the mountain surfaces work together through contrast. The pools remain light within the darker ground, and the sunlit slopes carry detail even at a distance. I made the photograph during my travels in Iceland in 2022, stopping to work with the balance between the foreground and the rising land. For me, it is the progression through those layers that gives the picture its depth: near water, rough ground, pale plain, and a mountain face large enough to hold the eye.
