Abstract Mineral Patterns Across Icelandic Geothermal Mud Basin

One of the reasons I keep returning to Iceland is that the landscape constantly defies expectations. In the geothermal regions surrounding Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland, the ground feels less like solid earth and more like a living surface shaped by heat rising from deep below. Steam vents, mineral deposits, and boiling mud pools quietly transform the terrain year after year.

From ground level, these geothermal fields appear chaotic and raw. The ground bubbles in places, mineral crusts crack beneath your feet, and the colors shift constantly depending on the chemical reactions happening underground. But once I lifted the drone above the landscape, something entirely different revealed itself. What seemed chaotic from the ground suddenly formed an intricate network of shapes, textures, and color patterns spread across the volcanic terrain.

This aerial photograph captures a wide geothermal mud basin where mineral deposits and geothermal activity have stained the earth in shades of burnt orange, pale yellow, gray, and deep volcanic brown. At the center of the composition sits a dark geothermal basin where mineral-rich water has collected. The basin spreads outward like a branching formation, resembling a river delta or tree roots extending across the mineral surface.

Surrounding the basin are dozens of small geothermal vents and shallow pools scattered across the terrain. Some appear as small circular openings in the ground, while others form shallow depressions filled with dark mineral water. These vents are the visible surface expressions of geothermal activity happening beneath the earth’s crust, where underground heat constantly interacts with groundwater and mineral-rich soil.

Photographing this area from the air completely changed my understanding of the landscape. Standing in the geothermal field, you experience it as a rugged, steaming environment filled with strange smells and shifting ground. From above, however, the patterns begin to reveal themselves. Mineral channels connect vents, colors transition gradually across the surface, and the geothermal basin serves as the visual anchor of the entire composition.

I photographed this scene while exploring the geothermal terrain near Lake Mývatn, one of the most active volcanic regions in Iceland. The landscape here feels almost prehistoric, shaped by volcanic forces that have been building beneath the island for thousands of years.

I personally sign each limited-edition print of this photograph and include a certificate of authenticity confirming its place in the edition. The image is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-quality materials to preserve the subtle textures and mineral color variations captured in the original aerial photograph.

Because of its natural abstract qualities and layered earth tones, this image works beautifully in contemporary spaces where texture and organic color play an important role in room design. The warm mineral tones and intricate surface patterns give the photograph a calm yet visually complex presence that rewards closer inspection.
