Granite Towers Rise Above Snow and Alpine Shrubs
The granite towers rise sharply above a much softer foreground of low alpine growth. I photographed the Howser Spires in the Bugaboos, where the mountains belong to British Columbia’s Purcell range. In black and white, the steep rock faces become the strongest shapes in the view. Bright patches of snow mark their bases, and a clear sky leaves the broken outline of the peaks easy to follow.
I like the contrast between the large vertical faces and the smaller ridges below them. Narrow grooves and shadowed clefts divide the granite, while the lower slopes carry a less regular pattern of rock and snow. Nearer the camera, shrubs fill the bottom edge with fine texture. A tall conifer on the right brings another vertical form into the composition, lighter and more delicate than the spires. Those foreground details let the view move from something close and tangible towards the much larger mountain forms.
The monochrome treatment gives me a way to connect those different surfaces through tone. Snow and sunlit stone provide the brightest areas; the recesses in the peaks hold the deepest shadows. Between them, the ridges and vegetation offer a wider range of greys. I wanted the photograph to preserve both the force of the towers and the detail around them. The peaks draw my attention first, but the changing textures below keep the landscape from becoming only a silhouette. For me, that combination of clear structure and smaller natural detail is what gives this view its lasting interest.
