Polished Metal and Curving Cables Fill the Engine Bay
Polished metal catches the light throughout this close photograph of a hot rod engine. The black and white treatment brings out the bright edges, dark recesses and many curved lines within the engine bay. I was drawn to the way a practical machine could become such a detailed arrangement of shapes when seen up close.
A rounded cover near the centre provides a clear starting point. Its smooth top reflects broad bands of light, while the mesh around its edge introduces a much finer pattern. Below it, smaller metal components, fittings and fasteners gather into a dense sequence. Pale cables curve down the left side, and darker hoses cross the foreground.
I made this photograph in 2013. What I enjoy is the variety of surfaces within such a compact view. Some parts are glossy enough to hold strong reflections; others show fine texture or stay almost entirely in shade. The monochrome palette keeps those changes connected without reducing the engine to a simple outline. There is still plenty for the eye to explore between the brightest areas.
For someone who loves hot rods, custom cars or automotive detail, this print can bring a strong mechanical subject to a garage workspace, study or living room. It offers an immediate focal point and smaller details that become more apparent with time. For me, the appeal is in that mixture of precision and visual complexity, with each curved cable and reflective surface contributing to the whole.
