Evergreens Follow the Rocky Shore Beneath a Clouded Sky
The wooded cliffs at Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick, make a strong edge between land and water in this black and white photograph. From above the shoreline, I looked along the rock faces and evergreen trees toward the more distant coast. The view gives the rocky detail a close presence while leaving the water open beside it.
The nearest cliff shows deep cracks and changing textures, with trees growing along its upper surface and around its edges. Further away, separate rock forms become smaller and more rounded. The forest follows the same receding line, carrying a dense pattern of branches and needles through the right side of the picture.
I photographed this scene in 2014. What draws me back is the difference between the rough shoreline and the quieter water. The clouded sky adds another broad texture above them, with pale and dark areas that echo some of the changes in the rock. In monochrome, those relationships become easier to notice without colour taking attention away from the forms.
This coastal print can bring a natural, textured presence to a cottage, study or living room. It may appeal to someone who knows New Brunswick, enjoys wooded coastlines or prefers seascapes where the land has as much character as the water. For me, the scene is about following the coast with the eye: starting at the close cliff face, then letting the trees and rock carry the view further along the shore.
