An Enclosed Walkway Bridges Brick Buildings Beneath a Tower
The enclosed walkway made me look into the narrow space between these Winnipeg buildings. I photographed the view in black and white while wandering downtown, keeping the older brick blocks in front of the taller building behind them. The alley provides a clear route into a scene otherwise filled with walls, windows and repeated vertical lines.
The walkway crosses above the opening, giving the composition a strong horizontal division. Its small window and panelled surface remain distinct from the brick on either side. Below it, the alley leads toward another facade, with small windows and doorways becoming visible farther back. I wanted the opening to stay readable without removing the clutter that belongs to the street.
Faded painted lettering sits high on the nearer walls. The words are only partly within the frame, making them marks on the buildings as much as signs to read. Fire-escape lines, patches in the masonry and varied window openings add finer details. Behind them, the tower has a much more regular arrangement of narrow vertical bands.
I like how the buildings share the same view without sharing the same scale or surface. Pale painted brick sits beside darker glazing, and the small alley is set beneath a much larger urban backdrop. Monochrome brings those layers together through texture and tone. The photograph keeps the downtown detail that made me stop: a passage through the older blocks with the city rising immediately behind it.
