A Clear Flamingo Eye and Dark Bill Against Soft Grey
The flamingo’s curved neck leads to a clear round eye and a sharply defined bill in this black and white portrait. I photographed the bird in 2012, keeping the view close enough for the head and upper neck to fill the square frame. The background remains soft, giving the profile a clean outline without removing the subtle tones within the feathers.
What first drew me in was the form. The long neck bends towards the head, then the bill turns downward in a much stronger curve. Its dark tip gives the pale portrait a concentrated point of contrast. Fine ridges along the bill’s edge become visible with close attention, while the eye supplies a small circular shape within all those longer lines.
Monochrome changes the pace of looking at a familiar bird. Instead of finding the flamingo through its colour, I follow the variations in feather texture and light. The crown appears slightly smoother than the neck, where small overlapping feathers create a more repeated pattern. Gentle shadows under the head keep the shape rounded rather than flat.
I made the portrait during a pause in the bird’s movement, watching until its profile became clear. That moment gave me the balanced arrangement I wanted: a strong bill, an open curve beneath the head and a quiet background around them. For someone drawn to elegant bird portraits, this photograph offers a restrained flamingo study whose interest grows through its fine surface detail and distinctive proportions.
