Curving Roads And Pale Rooftops Within Winter Woodland
From above, Haliburton Village appears closely woven into the surrounding trees. Snow lightens the ground and rooftops, while darker roads curve between the houses and into the hills. I made this aerial photograph in 2018 after an early snowfall, bringing the village and its wider Ontario woodland setting into the same frame.
The nearest road enters from the lower left and bends around a pale open area. Farther back, another curve leads uphill through the houses. Those lines help the eye move into the photograph, where small roofs and buildings appear at different distances among bare branches and darker evergreens. I find the mixture of settlement and forest particularly interesting from this angle. The village remains recognisable through its roads and homes, but the trees occupy much more of the view.
Snow makes the spaces between the branches easier to distinguish, creating a fine pattern of light and dark across the hillside. Near the lower edge, a long dark structure introduces a more continuous line beneath the scattered rooftops. Beyond the village, wooded ridges extend toward a low, quiet horizon. The black and white treatment keeps these layers connected without relying on seasonal colour. For me, the photograph offers a broader sense of place than a single street view could provide. As a print, it brings together the familiar scale of a small community and the spacious winter landscape around it.
