Iron Wheels And A Tall Smokestack Beside Winter Logs
Snow picks out the upper edges of this antique steam traction engine in Haliburton, Ontario. I photographed it standing beside stacks of cut logs, with a winter forest behind it and open snow across the foreground. The black and white treatment keeps attention on the machine's shapes: the tall smokestack, round boiler front, large flywheel, and spoked wheels.
I like how the pale covering makes parts of the engine easier to read. Snow traces the boiler and settles on smaller fittings, separating them from the dark metal underneath. The wheels remain largely exposed, their spokes creating open patterns against the white ground rather than becoming solid circles.
The surrounding landscape gives those mechanical details context. Logs recede toward the left, repeating their rounded ends at a smaller scale than the wheels. Behind them, trees form a dense backdrop that contrasts with the clear foreground. Keeping all three layers in the photograph lets the engine feel firmly placed within rural Ontario.
The machine is motionless in this frame, but its structure still invites a close look. I can move from the strong outline to the smaller connections and surfaces without losing the overall form. That combination is what drew me to the subject: something visually intricate held within a simple winter setting, with the snow revealing its contours rather than hiding them.
