Haarlem Geometric Brick Facade Black and White Architectural Photography
Vertical Bands of Brick and Pale Panels Step Skyward
I was walking through Haarlem after an espresso in the Grote Markt when this building’s facade drew my attention. The clouds had flattened the light, making the tall bands of brick and pale panels easy to follow. I photographed the view in black and white, keeping the stepped roofline against an open area of sky.
The building does not read as one simple block from this angle. Its sections rise and fall, with narrow vertical strips continuing down between windows and projecting brickwork. Some panels have a mottled surface, while the brick holds a finer, more regular pattern. That difference in texture gives the geometric arrangement much of its interest.
I framed the corner so the facade would turn through the picture. The nearer section stands more prominently, and the wall at the left recedes behind it. Along the lower edge, smaller windows and a little foliage bring another scale into the view. They give the tall pattern a base without taking attention from the shapes above.
The overcast light helped me avoid a strong split between sunlit and shaded walls. Instead, the surfaces separate through tone and texture: darker brick, paler cladding, narrow glazing and small recessed areas. I wanted the photograph to follow that arrangement as I saw it from the street, with the irregular heights making a modern urban composition out of repeated vertical lines.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
