Fort Jefferson Brick Arches and Gunrooms Photography Print
Weathered Brick Vaults Recede Through the Fort’s Interior
The arches line up so closely that the far end of the room seems to draw the whole image inward. At Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Florida, I photographed this sequence of brick gunrooms in colour. Their warm masonry and worn surfaces give the architectural print both a clear rhythm and a great deal of texture.
The nearest arch frames a smaller one, which frames another, continuing toward a dark opening in the distance. Individual bricks, mortar seams and pale weathered patches remain visible in the foreground. Light enters from the side and falls across the floor, changing from one bay to the next rather than filling the interior evenly.
I made this photograph in 2012. I like how the repeated structure makes the room easy to read at first, then allows its variations to appear. No two sections have quite the same colour or surface. Some areas are darker, others carry a greenish cast, and a narrow line along the floor adds another route for the eye to follow.
For someone interested in historic architecture, old forts or the places encountered while travelling in Florida, this print offers an interior view with a strong sense of depth. Its muted brick tones can sit comfortably in a study or living room. What draws me back is the combination of order and wear: the arches keep repeating, while the light and the marks on the masonry continually change.
