Greenwich Painted Hall Interior | Black and White Architectural Photography
Sweeping Arches and Painted Ceilings Seen From Below
A fluted column rises through the foreground and seems to carry the eye directly into the painted ceiling. I made this photograph inside the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London, in 2022. Looking upward brought its architecture and decoration together in a particularly dramatic way.
The Painted Hall had reopened in 2019 after a major conservation project. That context adds to my appreciation of the place, but the photograph is first about the experience of seeing it: the scale of the columns, the sweep of the arches, and the density of detail overhead.
Rather than trying to record the room from end to end, I concentrated on the meeting of its surfaces. The large column on the right establishes a strong diagonal. Smaller columns and gridded windows repeat beneath the ceiling, giving the eye places to pause among the painted figures and elaborate ornament.
Black and white makes the structure especially clear. Light catches the edges of carved capitals and mouldings, while the darker recesses separate one layer from the next. The paintings remain visible, but their tones become part of the larger rhythm of the interior.
I wanted to convey the feeling of standing beneath something much larger than myself. This view preserves that upward movement, allowing the room's geometry and decorative richness to remain closely connected.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
