Quebec Great Gray Owl in Forest Flight Colour Wildlife Photography
Wide Patterned Wings And Yellow Eyes Between Bare Trunks
The owl’s wings stretch nearly across this photograph, with the face held lower between them. Yellow eyes stand out against the muted browns and greys of the winter woodland. I photographed this great gray owl in Quebec in 2017, during time spent exploring forest areas for wildlife. The moment brought the whole bird into view between trunks and branches.
Waiting in the cold was part of making this image. The soft, overcast light helped preserve the feather pattern across the wings, and I wanted the surrounding forest to remain visible. Those bare branches give the flight a setting: the bird’s wide horizontal shape passes through a view filled with narrower verticals and crossing lines.
I find the face the strongest point of connection. The eyes are small within the overall wingspan, yet they hold my attention before I begin to trace the outer feathers. Their repeated bars and rounded tips create a broad, textured form. Behind the owl, the softer woodland keeps enough detail to show the environment without competing with the bird.
There is an unusual balance here between a fleeting movement and a clearly defined shape. On a wall, the wide wings and direct view of the face would give the photograph a strong presence. I would choose it for someone interested in owls, Canadian wildlife or nature photography with a subdued winter palette. For me, the image preserves the brief opening when the bird and the surrounding forest aligned within the frame.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
