Old Caddo Lake Cypress Trees with Autumn Reflections
Broad Rooted Trunks Stand Beneath Rust-Coloured Leaves and Moss
The broad bases of these cypress trees were what held my attention. In this autumn photograph from Caddo Lake, large trunks rise from calm water beneath rusty orange foliage and hanging Spanish moss. Their reflections stretch down through the lower frame, making the trees’ substantial forms part of both the grove and the lake surface.
I went out while the morning was still dim and watched the colour become clearer as the light increased. That gradual change let me spend time with the scene rather than rush past it. The water stayed quiet enough for the trunks and branches to settle into long reflections.
The closest tree on the right has a particularly textured base, with ridges and rounded projections catching the light. Beside it, a darker trunk provides a simpler vertical shape. More trees stand behind them, partly hidden by moss, giving the grove depth without losing the strength of the foreground.
The orange foliage brings warmth into a mostly earthy palette. It appears in bands between the branches, while the pale moss hangs downward and softens their edges. I like how those two finer textures balance the heavier bark and root forms.
The photograph came together through patience and attention to those relationships. Calm water, substantial trunks, and restrained autumn colour create a close woodland view where the details remain connected. The reflections give it a quieter lower half, extending the grove without competing with the trees above.
