Voronet Monastery Graffiti and Fresco Detail Photography Print
Etched Lettering Crosses the Colours of a Painted Wall
At Voronet Monastery in Romania, I found a wall detail that asked for a closer look. Painted shapes in rust red, ochre and blue are crossed by pale scratches and etched lettering. This colour photograph brings that small section of the monastery’s surface forward, letting its layered texture become the subject.
The painted forms remain visible beneath the marks, but their outlines are interrupted again and again. Fine lines run across larger letters; worn patches expose lighter areas between stronger blocks of colour. I am interested in that unevenness. The eye cannot follow the painted image for long without meeting another scratch, name or small break in the surface.
I made the photograph in 2011. Rather than showing the monastery as a whole, I chose to concentrate on a fragment of its wall. The close view gives equal attention to the original painted detail and the marks that sit across it. Their overlap creates a dense image, one that can read as an abstract arrangement at first and reveal its lettering as you spend more time with it.
For someone drawn to weathered surfaces, Romanian places or art with intricate texture, this print offers plenty to discover. Its warm colours can bring character to a study or living room. What stays with me is the physical detail: paint, abrasion and letters sharing the same surface, each visible without the whole becoming easy to untangle.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
