Illuminated Windows Form a Rhythm Across the Glass Facade
A grid of glass windows becomes a field of light in this black and white photograph of an office building at night. I made the image in 2011, concentrating on the facade rather than the skyline. The close view turns a familiar city building into an arrangement of bright interiors, dark panes and fine intersecting lines.
What interests me here is the variation inside that orderly framework. Some windows glow strongly enough to reveal desks, chairs and ceiling lights, while others stay dark or hold fragmented reflections. The floors cross the picture at an angle, giving the repeated rectangles a sense of movement. You can follow one band of light across the building, then lose it where a darker section interrupts the pattern.
The monochrome treatment keeps those changes in brightness at the centre of the photograph. Without colour competing for attention, the glass divisions become more noticeable, as do the differences between each small compartment. I find that the image rewards a second look: the overall structure is clear immediately, but its individual details take longer to separate.
As architectural wall art, it brings an urban rhythm to a study, living room or workspace. The combination of a precise grid and irregular illumination can suit someone who enjoys modern buildings, geometric imagery or the quieter side of city life. For me, the fascination lies in how many separate spaces can belong to a single continuous surface.
