Green Headlands and Patchwork Fields Above Blue Coastal Water
From above, Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast becomes a sequence of green headlands, steep cliffs and blue water. Fields reach almost to the cliff tops, with small houses and roads visible farther inland. I photographed this aerial view in colour, drawn to how clearly it connects the worked countryside with the much rougher edge of the sea.
The nearest headland has a broad grassy top and a heavily textured cliff face. Below it, separate rocks sit within turquoise patches of shallow water, with white surf tracing their outlines. Farther along, the coast turns through several points and small bays, leading toward a pale beach in the distance. That repeating land-and-water boundary gives the view a clear route to follow.
Inland, the fields introduce a different kind of pattern. Their straighter divisions and varied greens contrast with the irregular shore, while pale tan areas add another tone to the landscape. The buildings are small within that arrangement, helping reveal the scale of the coast without becoming the main subject.
I made this photograph in 2019. What interests me is the relationship between the two landscapes: open sea on one side, settled fields on the other, and the cliff edge holding them apart. For someone who loves the Causeway Coast, aerial photography or green coastal scenery, it offers a detailed view with a strong sense of place. In a living room or study, the blue water gives the eye breathing room while the headlands and fields invite exploration.
