Small Upright Figures Before Blue Ice and Grey Sea
A row of gentoo penguins crosses the uneven rock, with pale blue ice scattered across the sea behind them. I photographed this Antarctic shoreline in 2011, catching the group as its loose line formed. The birds’ upright shapes give the scene a gentle rhythm, each one separated enough to remain visible within the broader coastal setting.
I like how the rock provides a low stage for their movement. Its cracks and sloping surfaces lead across the frame, while the penguins introduce smaller vertical marks along the top. Their dark backs and pale fronts stand out against the water, making the group easy to follow even within a wide view of the shore.
Broken ice gathers near the lower edge, and larger blue-white pieces sit farther out at sea. Above, clouds make a subdued ceiling over the scene. The colour is restrained, with cool blue ice, grey water and warmer rock tones carrying most of the palette.
For me, the photograph holds the appeal of a small wildlife moment within a striking landscape. The penguins are the immediate focus, yet the sea and ice give their movement a clear sense of place. As a print, it offers an Antarctic coastal view with both character and detail, suited to someone drawn to penguins, polar landscapes and photographs that bring living figures into an expansive natural setting.
