New York Pride Parade Protest Black and White Documentary Photography
Marchers and Placards Beneath Broadway’s Busy Storefront Signs
At 31st Street and Broadway, the storefront signs were almost as dense as the placards passing beneath them. I photographed this New York Pride parade scene in 2017 from the street corner, where a public celebration also carried a visible protest. The group identified as Rise and Resist appears among flags, portraits and hand-held messages, with the city’s everyday signage still clearly present behind the marchers.
That mixture gives the image its particular character. Striped awnings, traffic signals and the West 31st Street sign establish the setting, while raised placards break up the view of the buildings. A marcher strides ahead near the centre, and a broad patterned banner stretches across the right. I like how individual people remain distinct within such a tightly gathered scene.
Black and white gathers the many visual elements into a strong pattern of dark fabric, pale signs and sunlit faces. The repeated letters compete with the shapes of arms, flags and heads, making the photograph rewarding to explore a little at a time. There is always another small gesture or piece of lettering to notice.
For me, the picture holds the experience of standing close to a moving public gathering in New York. It brings Pride, protest and the surrounding streetscape into one moment. As wall art, it offers a detailed documentary view with a strong graphic presence, suited to an interest in city life, public expression and the people who give a street its character.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
