Painted Walls Surround a Bright Geometric Glass Roof
Looking straight up changes the courtyard completely. At Galleria Sciarra in Rome, the glass roof becomes a bright central rectangle surrounded by painted walls, windows and ornamental borders. I made this colour photograph in 2010, drawn to the way a familiar architectural space could become almost abstract from below.
I was walking through Rome and looking beyond its best-known monuments when I stopped here. The view overhead held more interest for me than the passage at eye level. By aiming upward, I removed the street and people from the scene, allowing the roof and surrounding façades to define the whole photograph.
The dark roof grid gives the centre a clear structure. Around it, successive bands of windows and decoration build a deeper, more intricate frame. Painted figures and fine borders soften the geometry, while mouldings and window recesses provide darker edges. Small variations in light and the surfaces keep the near-symmetry from feeling completely regular.
Muted browns, faded reds, grey and cream support the detail without overpowering the central light. I like how the photograph changes with viewing distance: the glass roof and enclosing rectangles are immediate, but the painted surfaces emerge more slowly. The image brings an upward architectural perspective into a room, pairing strong geometry with the quieter complexity of Rome's decorative spaces. It rewards looking beyond the centre and following each layer toward the edges.
