Fresh Snow Along a Forest Edge Under Clear Winter Colour
A line of snow-covered evergreens rises above an open white foreground in Haliburton, Ontario. Their dark branches carry small layers of fresh snow, and the taller tree tops break into a clear blue sky. I photographed this winter scene in colour, drawn to the cool blue tones that remain visible even within a landscape dominated by white.
The open ground gives the forest room to stand apart. Soft bands of shade cross its surface, leading toward the more detailed trees at the back. Along that edge, evergreens of different heights overlap with thinner bare branches. Some tops are pointed and distinct; others gather into a denser outline. The fresh snow reveals each tree’s structure without hiding its darker needles.
I like the calm relationship between those three areas: smooth snow below, intricate woodland through the middle and open sky above. Each has its own texture and amount of detail. The colour keeps them connected, with pale blue in the foreground answering the stronger blue overhead. A few soft clouds add variation without taking the focus away from the forest.
Made in 2019, this image offers an unhurried view of winter near Haliburton. It can suit someone who loves Ontario’s woods, snowy cottage landscapes or a cool natural palette. In a bedroom, study or living room, the open foreground gives the eye somewhere to rest, while the snow-laden trees bring enough fine detail to reward returning to the scene.
