A Faded Chair Emblem Above Tangled Storefront Vines
The chair on the round sign is still visible, even as vines thread through the structure below it. I came across this abandoned storefront while driving rural roads in Georgia in 2006. It became part of my continuing interest in buildings that have slipped out of everyday use, where a few remaining details suggest what once took place.
Here, the tall sign gives the photograph its main shape. Its circular emblem rises above angled panels and a broad section of weathered vertical boards. Lettering has faded into the surface, while a smaller parking sign remains easier to read. I find that uneven survival of words and symbols compelling: the original purpose lingers in fragments across the front.
The low building sits behind a thick network of stems and branches. Window frames form dark rectangles beneath the roofline, and bare trees carry finer lines into the pale sky. Those repeated tangles connect the ground, sign and storefront, making the whole scene feel closely bound together.
I chose black and white to emphasise the worn surfaces and the atmosphere of a place left behind. The pale sign face and darker windows give the eye strong anchors among the dense vegetation. This print offers a detailed view of roadside Georgia, with the faded chair emblem providing an unusual focal point. For me, it leaves space to consider the ordinary businesses that once shaped a journey through these rural roads.
