Soft Flowing Water Beneath a Steep Rock Face and Snow
Molneva Waterfall spills across a low ledge beneath a steep mountain face in this black and white photograph from Lofoten, Norway. I made the image in 2023, keeping the flowing water close in the frame while allowing the rugged slope and patches of snow to rise behind it. The scene brings two very different kinds of texture together.
The water is the brightest, softest part of the image. It falls in broad streaks across the ledge and spreads towards the lower left, where white turbulence fills the channel. Above it, the mountain remains sharply broken into dark rock and pale snow. Those irregular patches prevent the background from becoming a single solid mass, giving the eye more to explore beyond the cascade.
I kept a strip of dark ground in the foreground as another point of contrast. Thin branches lie across its uneven surface, introducing smaller lines beneath the much larger sweep of water. The close view makes the cascade feel substantial, but the mountain behind it preserves the scale of the surrounding landscape.
For me, the photograph depends on that balance between the near flow and the rock above. Monochrome brings their differences forward without relying on colour: smooth water, rough ground, sharp stone and scattered snow each have a distinct presence. This waterfall photograph offers a compact view of the Lofoten landscape, inviting attention first to the falling water and then to the rugged forms that frame it.
